چکیده

This paper presents the limitations and potential of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy applied to study cellulosic textile collections The technique helps differentiate natural fibres according content lignin, pectin, hemicellulose, wax, although some problematic issues should be considered. spectral differences derived from environmental humidity uptake plant composition are reviewed discussed in light new experimental data. Diagnostic bands proposed that can discriminate between different plants. contribution ageing is also considered, demonstrating sometimes aged cannot reliably recognised. In contrast, modified proven. best results were obtained when microinvasive was coupled with SEM observations. protocol tested on microsamples various materials traditional Japanese samurai armours dating 16th 20th centuries (Morigi Collection, Museo delle Culture, Lugano, Switzerland). facilitated a complete characterisation demonstrated used wide variety materials, including both man-modified fibres, paper.

Chemical imaging of microfluidic flows using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.

Elucidating the chemical composition of microfluidic flows is crucial in both understanding and optimising reactive processes within small-volume environments. Herein we report the implementation of a novel detection methodology based on Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR)-Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopic imaging using an infrared focal plane array detector for microfluidic applic...

Specific interactions between alkali metal cations and the KcsA channel studied using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy

The X-ray structure of KcsA, a eubacterial potassium channel, displays a selectivity filter composed of four parallel peptide strands. The backbone carbonyl oxygen atoms of these strands solvate multiple K(+) ions. KcsA structures show different distributions of ions within the selectivity filter in solutions containing different cations. To assess the interactions of cations with the selectivi...

Identification of Cellulosic Fibres by FTIR Spectroscopy I: Thread and Single Fibre Analysis by Attenuated Total Reflectance

The ability to accurately identify fibres is of importance to conservators, allowing the most appropriate methods of treatment to be employed. Our research has concentrated on the development of an ATR FT-IR spectroscopic technique for the characterisation of cellulosic (plant) fibres. Six species of fibre were examined, taken largely from the bast group (flax, hemp, jute and ramie), along with...

Rapid discrimination of maggots utilising ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.

Entomological evidence is used in forensic investigations to indicate time since death. The species and age of maggots or flies that are present at the scene can be used when estimating how much time has passed since death. Current methods that are used to identify species and developmental stage of larvae and fly samples are highly subjective, costly and often time consuming processes and requ...
